Overview
Playa Azul is a vast, grab-bag beachbreak where peaks bulge up and down the sand and you can more or less paddle straight out from wherever you park. Anyone who has surfed Baja Malibu in Northern Baja will spot the family resemblance immediately: glassy mornings, fast walls, and round barrels. It is an often-overlooked jewel, and the water is clean.
When It Works
The beach picks up swell from southeast through south to west-northwest and breaks over sand, serving up both rights and lefts. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, which covers everything from chest high to double overhead. Quality is decent when it lines up, but onshore wind tears it apart often, so an early session is usually the smart call. Spring through autumn is the main window, with April to September the pick of the year.
Wind and Tide
Look for east-northeast (ENE) offshore wind, with a workable wind window running from northwest through north to east. The sandbars fire on low to mid tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Bring a shortboard or a fish, and expect a session that suits intermediate and expert surfers. The lineup stays fairly quiet and spread out along the beach, with a somewhat reserved atmosphere where humility and respect go a long way. Because the surfing landscape is so wide, plan on drifting a long way from your paddle-out spot, and on some bicep-burning current on the paddles back out. Strong currents and long paddles are part of the deal here, and turning your back to the ocean is the main way to get caught out.
Access
Park at any of the restaurants along the beach and walk straight down to the sand.
