Overview
Playa Carmen is a friendly beach break that peels both ways, with lefts and rights over a mix of uneven reef and sand. There's a separate reef at the north end that comes into its own on the right tide. It's a good fit for improvers and intermediates working on their surfing.
When It Works
Playa Carmen draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest swell the best match. Through the dry season it picks up northwest swells nicely, serving up fatter, slower, longer rights alongside shorter, steeper lefts. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and tends to be moderately consistent.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. The break holds up across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. The reef at the north end is the exception, coming good at high tide.
Local Tips
This is an approachable wave for intermediates finding their rhythm. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, with a fair share of surf-school groups sharing the water.
Access
There's camping close by, along with a surf school and a surf shop. Parking is free, either roadside or nearby.
