Overview
Playa de Cofete is a left- and right-breaking beach break on the northern half of an extensive golden crescent of sand that runs down to the southern tip of the island. A mini headland separates Cofete from neighbouring Playa Barlovento. The sand soaks up swell, and the beach suffers from heavy long-shore drift and rips, so it is often messy and wind-blown.
When It Works
Cofete draws swell from southwest to north (SW-N), with northwest (NW) the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Because the sand absorbs so much swell, it comes into its own on small, peaky swells rather than bigger, disorganised days.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind, and glassy or sirocco conditions to clean it up. The break can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate-level beach break. You will rarely find a crowd here, but the long-shore drift and rips mean it is not a place to surf alone.
Access
There is free parking, including roadside spots. Take care where you leave a car, as the soft sand can swallow vehicles.
