Overview
Playa de Esquinzo is a swell-exposed beachbreak tucked in under high cliffs that give it great wind protection. It throws up powerful wedges when it's on. Like nearby Cotillo, though, the beach usually lacks enough sand through winter.
When It Works
Breaking over sand, Esquinzo draws swell from southwest through north to northeast (SW-N-NE), with northwest the best match. The banks peel both left and right. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Sheltered by the cliffs behind it, the beach holds up well in wind, and the offshore direction is east. It works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
When it's small and clean, Esquinzo is friendly for beginners. Expect a crowded lineup when it's on, and be ready for some localism.
Access
Esquinzo sits isolated and hard to find, about 5 km south of Cotillo just before the Esquinzo Canyon. Turn left after the Cotillo football stadium and head south. Bring a spare tyre and extra water for the drive out, since it's a remote run. Break-ins are a real risk here, so leave nothing in your car. There's camping nearby, with free roadside parking.
