Overview
Playa De La Canteria is a small sandy bay tucked beneath the cliffs at the northern tip of the island. It's a beach break over a sand bottom, and the shape of the bay serves up both lefts and rights depending on the tide and where you sit.
When It Works
The bay draws swell from northwest through northeast (NW-NE), with north swell the best match. It is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and once swells push past 6 ft the bay tends to close out. From mid to high tide a peak breaks in the centre of the bay, and at high tide it firms up into a more defined left. Also at high tide, a righthander can peel down the rocks on the eastern side of the bay for a fast, sometimes hollow ride.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest offshore wind to clean it up. The bay comes to life from mid to high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is an approachable, beginner-friendly bay, but it is not hands-off. Expect strong rips and side drift, so keep an eye on your position in the water. The lineup can get crowded at times.
