Overview
Playa de los Caballos is a crescent-shaped, cliff-lined bay with one of Cantabriaโs standout waves. The main break is a finger of reef angling into the Bay of Biscay, focusing swell into a quality left that can feather, barrel, and run for more than 100 meters toward the inside.
The wave breaks over reef and sand, with the main setup being a left-hand reef.
When It Works
The spot works with swell from west-northwest to north and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Autumn, especially September to November, is the key season.
Once it gets above the top of that range, there can be a lot of water moving around in the bay, and rips can affect the quality of the waves.
Wind and Tide
The workable wind window is southeast to south, with south-southeast as the offshore direction.
Low to mid tide suits the spot, and a rising tide is better.
Local Tips
This is better suited to intermediate surfers on shortboards. It gets busy, especially on weekends, so an early arrival helps.
The lineup atmosphere is generally neutral, but humility and respect are appreciated. Paddling can be a workout when it is pumping, especially when trying to get under bigger sets.
Watch the bottom, as bouncing off it is a real hazard.
Access
Access is simple: take the road to Playa de Cuchia and bear right.
Car crime has been a problem here in the past, so be careful with valuables. The environment is not bad on average, though there can be some runoff when it rains.
