Overview
Playa de Los Lances is the town beach of Tarifa, tucked behind the wall that joins Isla de Tarifa to the mainland. The waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand and peel both left and right. This is a spot that needs a serious setup to fire, coming alive when a very strong groundswell meets strong east winds.
When It Works
Los Lances draws its swell from southwest to northwest (SW-NW) and is usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. The best days arrive with a very strong groundswell, so it rewards patience: consistency here is low and the good windows are occasional rather than reliable.
Wind and Tide
Look for an east (E) offshore wind to clean up the faces. The beach works through low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers. Expect a competitive lineup when it works, and note that kitesurfers and windsurfers share the water and add to the mix.
Access
You will find the beach at the south end of town. There is a car park with paid, metered parking.
