Overview
Playa Jacó is a sandy beachbreak in the middle of Costa Rica's main surf town. Peaks break both left and right, and with the town packed with hotels, surf shops, bars, and discos, it's an easy place to base yourself and paddle out between everything else.
When It Works
Jacó draws swell from south through southwest, with southwest the best match. It's a consistent beachbreak over sand, breaking as both lefts and rights, and it's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. The banks close out readily, so it pays to pick off the cleaner peaks when they line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to groom the peaks. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the higher tide tends to serve up the most consistent waves.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for beginners, with forgiving learner waves rolling in off the sand. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, with locals and travellers sharing the best peaks.
Access
As the main surf town on this stretch, Jacó has everything close at hand: surf schools and surf shops, restrooms, and camping nearby. Parking is free, including roadside spots.
