Overview
Playa Norte is a beach break over a mix of boulders and sand, and a popular summer spot that draws weekend visitors from Lima. The boulder-and-sand bottom can put some shape into the wave, but it is usually short, slamming sections that suit the bodyboard crew.
When It Works
Playa Norte draws swell from the south to west (S-W), with southwest (SW) the best match. It is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and stays moderately consistent. A small swell is the time for the rights; push it bigger and the beach turns heavy, closing out with short barrels. Around the headland to the south, El Paso is a powerful, punishing righthander over boulders that comes alive in a strong south-southwest swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for east (E) offshore wind. It works through low, mid, and high tide, but a rising tide is the better call, and the rights in particular sharpen up on the push.
Local Tips
This is a wave for intermediate surfers; beginners will get punished. The rights at the north end draw the crowd, so expect a moderately busy lineup when it is on. Watch the bottom as well, since the rocks are covered in shells and urchins nest in the cracks. When it is big, even the Pico Alto crew are wary here, as getting out the back can be a real nightmare.
