Overview
Plentzia is a sandbar lefthander breaking at a river mouth, tucked between the estuary and a pier near the town of the same name. It's a favourite with longboarders, and in summer the beach draws big crowds of beachgoers. Water quality takes a hit from estuarine, residential, and stormwater pollution, so it's worth keeping that in mind.
When It Works
Plentzia draws swell from west to north, with northwest (NW) swell the best match. The wave works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and is moderately consistent through winter, which is when it's most likely to be on.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind, and the setup also offers shelter from west and northwest winds. Surf it from low to mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better bet.
Local Tips
The wave suits intermediate surfers and is popular with longboarders. Expect a very crowded lineup at weekends when it's working.
Access
The spot sits close to the town of Plentzia, with good beach facilities including showers and a lifeguard, plus camping nearby at Gorliz. You'll find roadside parking and a car park, and parking is no problem in winter when the wave is most likely to break.
