Point Annihilation Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Point Annihilation is a powerful right-hand point that lives up to its name, kicking off with a barrelling take-off before opening into long, dynamic walls. It breaks over an uneven reef and earns an excellent rating among the waves in the area. Getting out there means a long paddle from the ruins of the Waikokopu wharf.

When It Works

The point draws swell from the southwest through southeast, with south (S) swell the best match. It is usable from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft and handles plenty of size, so it keeps its shape as the swell builds. Consistency is moderate, which means worthwhile windows when the setup lines up rather than surf on every check.

Wind and Tide

Look for north (N) offshore wind. The reef can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the wave links up best on the lower end.

Local Tips

This is an expert's wave, from the heavy take-off to the long walls. Expect a busy lineup with local rippers out when it's on.

Access

From Napier, head north on Pandora Road (State Highway 2), onto Meeanee Quay and Main North Road out of the city. Stay on State Highway 2 through Wairoa, then at Nuhaka go straight through the roundabout onto Nuhaka Opoutama Road and continue to Waikokopu. Turn right onto Waikokopu Road and park at the end, where a car park offers free parking, then walk down to the beach.
