Overview
Point Dume State Beach, also called Westward Beach or Drainpipes, is a fickle beach break that can throw heavy tubes when the sand lines up. The peaks you can surf break over sandbars off the backside of Point Dume, which is private and off-limits itself, and they run both left and right.
When It Works
It takes the right angle of south or west swell to fire, drawing from south to west (S-W). The break works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a hard-hitting wave better suited to confident surfers than beginners. Watch for heavy shorepound and strong currents, which get especially nasty on west swells.
Access
Access is through the pay-lot at the south end of Westward Beach Road.
