Poneloya is a sand-bottomed beachbreak that holds a bit more shape than the long, straight sands stretching north and south. It doesn't pull in as much swell as the breaks further down the coast, but when a swell does land it can turn heavy fast, with strong rips and close-outs.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from south through west, with southwest swell the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and peels both left and right. Consistency is moderate, so it rewards catching it on the days the swell and sandbanks line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The lineup stays empty and rarely surfed, even though Quiksilver once ran a comp here, so expect a quiet paddle-out. Mellow days make it a friendly spot for beginners, though it pays to stay aware once the swell picks up and the rips and close-outs move in.
