Overview
Pontal is an open, exposed beach break that peels both left and right over sand. The river running alongside shapes the sandbanks, and when they line up the bank throws out some nice, sucky peaks. There's also good SUPing to be had in the river itself.
When It Works
Pontal draws swell from the northeast through east-southeast to south (NE-ESE-S), and it comes into its best form on an east (E) swell. The cleanest peaks tend to show on a southeast to south swell, breaking with real punch. It's a consistent bank, and it stays rideable across a wide range, working from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for west (W) offshore wind to groom the faces. The bank works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and those sucky peaks tend to fire best as the tide pushes in.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers well. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, though there's usually room to spread out and find your own peak.
Access
Pontal is reachable only by boat, so getting out here takes a bit of planning. Parking is restricted.
