Populars, or Pop's, is a long, curving stretch of reef in Waikiki, sitting just west of Canoes and a bit further out. It's a peak with a decent right that peels and swings down the line, throwing up a few bowly sections toward the inside, alongside a shorter, mushier left. Most days it's a mellow, user-friendly wave, but it can really come alive when a solid swell is running. The bottom is dead coral reef, so keep that in mind.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from anywhere between southwest and southeast, though it's usually best on a south to southwest swell. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, holding size from waist high to well overhead. Summer is the season here, roughly April through October, and it stays moderately consistent across spring, summer, and autumn. Every so often it fires on a big south swell.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind, with calm mornings or anything from the northwest through east keeping it clean. It breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a fun intermediate wave that suits just about any board, from shortboards and fish to funboards, longboards, and bodyboards. Expect a busy lineup whenever it's working, as Waikiki stays crowded. The atmosphere is generally neutral, though the heavier crowd shows up when a solid south swell lines up. Watch for the reef, plenty of boards, and first-timers who can get in the way.
Access
Populars is easy to reach, sitting right in front of the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, across the channel and east of Canoes. You'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, plus a surf school and surf shop nearby. Parking options include a car park along with metered, roadside, and other paid and restricted spaces. The paddle out from the beach is long, but it's manageable once you're outside.
