Overview
Porridge is a grinding left-hand pointbreak that throws up heavy barrels over uneven, rocky reef. When it lines up it is one of the best waves around, a serious, hollow left that rewards commitment.
When It Works
Porridge draws swell from south through west, and a straight south swell is the best match for the point. That is when the reef really turns on, firing off long, heavy barrels down the line. It works from 1.2 m / 4 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so there is a wide window between the smaller days and the truly serious size. It is only moderately consistent, but the waves are worth waiting for when the setup lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northeast offshore wind to groom the point and hold those barrels open. The wave breaks best around mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call as the reef fills in.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. The barrels are heavy and the reef is unforgiving, so it suits confident surfers who know how to handle a fast, hollow left. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it is firing.
Access
Porridge sits on private land, so ask the farmer for permission before heading down. The same permission covers Beatons, the quality lefts in the next bay south. Parking is free, with roadside spots available, though it can be restricted.
