Overview
Pozo de Lizas is Ilo's designated summer beach, a sand-bottomed beach break that peels both left and right. It has a reputation as the safest beach in the area for currents, which is a big part of why it draws so many holidaymakers.
When It Works
This is a consistent break that draws swell from south through west (S-W), with south swell the best match. Even small south swells fill in good banks that work well for learners. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft.
Wind and Tide
The main catch here is that it blows out easily, so you'll want clean conditions with a north offshore wind holding it together. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Pozo de Lizas is a beginner-friendly spot, so it's a natural place to learn on those forgiving banks. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on, especially once the summer crowds arrive.
Access
A lifeguard patrols the beach in summer, and there are restrooms and showers on hand. The promenade backing the beach is lined with restaurants and the usual facilities. Parking is easy, with a free car park plus roadside spots.
