Overview
Praia da Rocha is a long, south-facing sandy beach fronting the town of Portimão, best known for the hollow left that peels off the western breakwater by the rivermouth. The jetty wave is wedgy and famous for its tubes, breaking over a mix of sand and uneven reef, while further west along the beach a handful of peaks serve up fun lefts and rights. It sits in the heart of a major tourist resort, and as a whole it's a decent spot with an easy paddle out when the surf is small.
When It Works
The beach picks up swell from southeast through south to west (SE-S-W), with southwest (SW) swell the best match, and works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. The breakwater left is inconsistent and needs a solid swell to get going, but through the winter it breaks regularly, with December to February the prime window.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) wind blowing offshore. The spot can work through low, mid, and high tide, and a rising tide is generally the better call. The peaks further west along the beach tend to do better on the lower tides.
Local Tips
Praia da Rocha suits intermediate surfers and takes just about every craft: shortboards, fish, funboards, longboards, SUPs, bodyboards, and it's a bodysurfing option too. The breakwater left draws a keen bodyboard crew and a tight-knit group of local surfers, so expect it to be busy whenever it breaks, with a somewhat reserved lineup that turns competitive when the wave is on. The upside of such a long beach is that there's plenty of space to spread out along the western peaks. Water quality is generally fine, though it can dip after rain.
Access
There are parking bays by the breakwater on Avenida Rio Arade, plus a mix of a car park with free parking, paid parking, and roadside parking. The beach is well set up, with restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, a surf school, a surf shop, and camping.
