Overview
Praia Grande is a 2 km stretch of beach in Rio Grande do Sul with various peaks scattered along its length. The waves are mostly lefts that form out by the point and then reform on the inside, losing some power as they run down the line. The bottom is a mix of rock ledge and sand, and the beach also doubles as a big kiteboarding venue.
When It Works
Praia Grande draws swell from east through south, with an east swell the best match. Summer southeast swells are what light up the peaks along the beach, and it works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft. Consistency is moderate, so it pays to catch it on the right day. The southern end, with its rock-and-sand bottom, is the local pick and comes into its own when it gets stormy in winter.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The beach can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly, beginner-suited spot, and you can expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.

There's a car park with free parking, plus roadside parking when that fills up.
