Overview
Praia Grande in Ubatuba is a consistent city beachbreak that peels over sand and offers both lefts and rights. It's really three peaks along the same stretch: Baguari, a classic left at one end; Salva-vidas in the centre by the lifeguard building, which serves up both rights and lefts; and Rocky Point, a righthander. The sand does get crowded, but a steady supply of quality waves makes the company worth it.
When It Works
Praia Grande stays consistent and pulls in swell from east through south (E-S), with southeast swell the best match. Each peak has its own preference: Baguari lights up on south swell, Salva-vidas comes alive on southeast and east swell, and Rocky Point wants east swell. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. When there's east swell running, you'll often find more good waves around the southern headland at Toninhas.
Wind and Tide
Look for northwest offshore wind. The beach can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves here are approachable enough for beginners. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, since this is a popular city beach.
