Overview
Praia Macumba is a sand-bottomed beach break peeling both left and right. Unusually for this coastline, it is normally a fat, rolling wall with a slopey, easy take-off, which makes it a natural fit for longboarders and anyone still finding their feet. It handles plenty of size, and deep channels let you paddle out at the main peak on the eastern point. The wall steepens down the west end and at Secrets, the sucky bodyboard spot next door.
When It Works
Macumba draws swell from east through south to southwest, and it lines up best on a southeast swell. It is a consistent break, so rideable days come around regularly. The wave works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for north offshore wind to clean it up. It can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The gentle take-off makes this a friendly wave for beginners, but that same ease pulls in the crowds, so expect a very busy lineup when it is on. You will share the water with surfers of every experience level, so stay switched on during the paddle-outs.
Access
Facilities are well sorted, with restrooms, showers, camping, a lifeguard, and a surf school on hand. Parking runs from a car park with free spaces to paid and roadside options.
