Overview
Puerto Escondido is a world-class beachbreak on Zicatela Beach, widely known as the "Mexican Pipeline." Powerful, cavernous barrels unload close to shore over a sand bottom, throwing up both lefts and rights. A deep offshore trench focuses and amplifies incoming swell, which is why the waves jack up so dramatically. It earns its excellent rating, but once it gets overhead this is committed, expert territory only.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west, with south (S) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 6.1 m / 20 ft, so there's a wide working window from head high right up to genuinely huge faces. Puerto is consistent and breaks throughout spring, summer, and autumn. Wave choice is everything here: plenty of the sets close out, so patience pays off while you wait for the one that stays open.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind, which grooms the faces before it typically backs off later in the morning. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a wave for expert surfers, and it rewards the right equipment. Shortboards work when it's smaller, while a gun comes into its own once the size stacks up, and bodyboarding and bodysurfing both have a place in the mix. Expect a busy lineup when it's on, though the atmosphere is friendly.
Access
Getting to the beach is straightforward, with restrooms, showers, a surf school, and a surf shop on hand, plus lifeguards watching the water. Parking is easy, with a car park offering free parking alongside paid and roadside options. Stay switched on in the water: strong currents, powerful rips, and heavy, board-snapping waves are all part of the deal, and it's worth keeping an eye on your gear for theft.
