Overview
Pulau Dana is a remote reef break on a tiny island more than 160 km west of Rote, where a long, barrelling left pointbreak and its attendant right pick up just about all the swell reaching this corner of Indonesia. The waves break over dead coral, and with turtles about the only locals, it is a genuinely isolated setup miles from anywhere.
When It Works
The left is the standout here, a long, barrelling point that rewards intermediate surfers when it lines up. It draws swell from southwest through west, with southwest (SW) the best match, and is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. It is only moderately consistent, so expect hit-or-miss windows, though its exposure helps it catch most of what is on offer.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind, which grooms the left cleanly; the right does not get that same offshore shaping in the trades. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a quiet lineup with almost no one around. This is a spooky, isolated spot far from anywhere, so take care. It best suits intermediate surfers.
