Overview
Punta Aguja is a beach break of lefts and rights set among the beaches of Bayovar, about 150 km southwest of Piura and arguably the last pristine stretch of coast in Peru. Wide bays are fringed by white granite rock formations and dunes, and the crystal-clear water is often full of dolphins, turtles, and flocks of seabirds. Waves break over a mix of uneven reef and sand. The point also marks where the Equatorial Counter Current loses its battle with the Humboldt, so the water turns noticeably colder just south of the rocky headland.
When It Works
The break draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and is moderately consistent, so you will find rideable days without it turning on every time. When the point goes too small, the beaches running down toward Nonura can hold a fun peak or two and make a handy backup.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind, and keep an eye on the forecast because this spot blows out easily. It can work across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is a friendly spot for longboarding and a good place for beginners to find their feet. Expect a fairly quiet lineup, so there is usually plenty of room to spread out.
