Overview
Punta Arenas is a quality left-hand point that only rarely breaks, but it's worth the wait when it does. The wave peels over a mix of uneven reef and sand, and it can turn sectiony and a touch mushy because wind gets into the lineup easily. The water runs cold here, with the south side of Talara often a couple of degrees colder than the north, and pollution from the local oil industry can leave a slick around the port area.
When It Works
The point draws swell from south through west, with a southwest (SW) swell the best match, and it really comes to life on a moderate swell. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. It's somewhat inconsistent, so it takes the right setup to switch on, but the quality is there when everything lines up.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind, keeping in mind the lineup is fairly exposed and wind slips in without much trouble. It works through low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup stays fairly quiet even on the days it's working.
