Punta de Bombón is a sand-bottomed beach break in southern Peru, overlooked by a huge statue of Christ. It shares a similar setup to nearby Tiro Alto, but the Rio Tambo rivermouth can shape better sandbanks here. Both lefts and rights peel over the sand.
When It Works
Super-exposed to the southwest, Punta de Bombón draws swell from the south through west, with west swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft, and on moderate to big swells endless lines of whitewash come rumbling in. This is mainly a summer break that tends to max out in winter.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind, and aim for the morning before the afternoon breeze sets in. The bank can work through low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
It's a friendly spot for beginners, with easy walk-out whitewash rides for catching your first waves, while more experienced surfers can hunt A-frames out the back. Watch for strong longshore drift and keep marking your position in the lineup.
