Overview
Punta Mita is the exposed northern headland of Puerto Vallarta, a fast, hollow right that breaks over uneven reef. A dozen reefs dot the peninsula, but Punta Mita itself stands out for its great year-round swell exposure and dependable offshore winds. It holds northwest swells through the winter and switches to southwest swells in summer, so there's something to work with across the seasons.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from southwest through northwest (SW-NW), with west swell the best match. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. Consistency is moderate, so expect worthwhile windows when the setup lines up rather than surf on tap every day.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to groom the face. The right can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an intermediate wave, and the fast, hollow right rewards confident, committed surfing. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's on.
Access
Punta Mita is boat access only. Getting in can be a hassle: it's a long walk where local security staff can turn you away, so many surfers hop on boats from the nearby villages instead. Parking around the break is restricted.
