Punta Rocas Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Punta Rocas is Peru's own "Rocky Point," a famous reef break and the site of many a national championship. It peaks off a blunt headland and breaks both ways, though the lineup favours the rights. Expect thick, powerful, occasionally sectiony walls grinding down an uneven reef.

When It Works

The reef draws swell from south through west, with southwest (SW) the best match. It's usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, holding size well from small days up to triple overhead without closing out. This is one of the most consistent waves in the area, and it comes into its own through autumn and winter, roughly April to September. The rights are the draw here, offering muscular walls with plenty of power for blasting off the top and snapping back, while the lefts turn more tubey in smaller SW swells.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind. It can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call. Higher tides tend to throw some hollow sections as the wave breaks closer to the rocks.

Local Tips

Punta Rocas suits intermediate surfers on a shortboard, with a gun worth having when it gets big. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, and an atmosphere that can feel a little reserved. Mind the rocky bottom, and keep an eye out for fishing lines on the inside. Most surfers paddle out from the southside.

Access

Getting in is simple, with a car park and paid parking. It's worth paying someone to keep an eye on your car.
