Quintana is a sandy-bottomed left that sits across the jetties from Surfside, backed by an industrial stretch of the Freeport harbor and Brazos River delta. It usually serves up soft, mushy waves, but it finds real power when a strong swell fills in, so it is a break worth keeping an eye on rather than counting on. The forgiving sand bottom and mellow nature make it approachable for beginners.
When It Works
Quintana draws swell from east to south (E-S), with an east (E) swell the best match and the one most likely to turn this otherwise mushy spot punchy. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 2.1 m / 7 ft, and while it only reaches its potential on select swells, it stays moderately consistent through spring, autumn, and winter.
Wind and Tide
Look for north (N) offshore wind to clean up the surface, and a westerly wind can also work when there is swell. The spot breaks across low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is an easygoing wave suited to beginners, and it rewards funboards, longboards, and SUPs that keep gliding through the softer sections. The lineup is usually quiet and can feel a little reserved, though the atmosphere stays welcoming when it works.
Access
Getting here is straightforward, but the drive around from Surfside takes some time. You will find paid and metered parking along with roadside spots and a car park. Watch for currents near the jetty, and be ready for a long paddle on the bigger days.
