Overview
Rag's Left is a left-hand reef break peeling over live coral. It sits down the reef from a heavier, more punishing right, and it is the less viscous of the two. Recent reef-rising earthquakes reshaped it: where it once reeled off perfectly down the front of the reef, it now throws up boils and churning, shallow fingers of coral. The last 100 metres tends to be the most approachable stretch, where the wave refracts around Pitojetsabeu Island and opens into a whole new, mellower section. Up at the top of the reef, perfection and ugly shut-downs sit side by side.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west, with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It is usable from 1.8 m / 6 ft to 5.5 m / 18 ft, and you will want around 6 ft faces to clear the slabby corner section before the wave wraps into its mellower finish. Consistency is the catch: it breaks far less often than nearby Thunders, so it is worth waiting for the right pulse.
Wind and Tide
Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind. It can work through most of the tide, though a rising tide is the better call and it favors mid tide.
Local Tips
This is an expert-only wave. The bigger days demand an air-drop take-off, a trusty pintail, and a gung-ho attitude to handle the top-of-the-reef sections where clean walls and shut-downs co-exist.
