Red Strand (Dirk Bay) surf guide

Red Strand, also known as Dirk Bay, is a beach located on the south coast, which offers a somewhat sheltered surfing experience. It’s a nice spot, especially during the winter months when swells from the west get stronger, and the waves start to pop. The beach is easily accessible, making it a convenient choice for surfers looking to catch some waves without the hassle of a long trek.

The surf here is primarily beach breaks that can produce decent waves, with the best action happening when the swell comes from the southwest or directly from the south. You can expect the waves to handle sizes starting at around 2 feet (approximately 0.6 meters). The surf breaks can form hollow peaks that offer both left and right rides. Mid to high tide usually works best, and the northeast wind is preferred for cleaner conditions. It’s important to note that this spot is best suited for intermediate surfers who can navigate the occasional strong rip and the varying wave conditions.

To get there, just follow the signs to Red Strand or Galley Head off the R598. There’s parking available right by the beach, which makes it easy to jump in for a surf session. Overall, Red Strand has its moments, especially in winter, and it can be a fun spot to explore when the conditions align. Just make sure you're ready for some variable surfing!
