Overview
Rio Siera, also known as Furnas, is an excellent beachbreak in a pristine setting. Lefts and rights peel over sand along a long stretch of beach, and the wave shows up far more often than not — this is one of the more reliable breaks around.
When It Works
The beach draws swell from southwest through northwest, with northwest swell the best match. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, and thanks to its consistency you can count on rideable waves through much of that range on a regular basis.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southeast wind to groom it offshore. The beach can work through the full tide cycle, with a rising tide generally the better call and the lower stages often producing the best shape.
Local Tips
This is a spot for expert surfers: strong rips run down the length of the long beach, so know your limits before paddling out. The upside of the remote, unspoiled setting is that the lineup is rarely crowded.
Access
There's a car park with free parking, along with restrooms and a camping option nearby.
