Overview
Rockaway is the closest surfing beach to New York City, a sand-bottomed beachbreak that peels both left and right. The waves are fairly average and usually need a sizable swell to come through, so the lineup itself often ends up being more of a challenge than the surf.
When It Works
Rockaway draws swell from east to south, with an east swell the best match. The bigger east swells are the ones that push some decent lefts through. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and stays moderately consistent overall.
Wind and Tide
Look for a northwest offshore wind to clean things up. The beachbreak works through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Expect a very busy lineup whenever it's breaking, and the crowd can get aggressive. The mellow, average beachbreak waves do make it a workable spot for beginners when the pressure in the water eases off.
Access
You'll find restrooms, showers, a lifeguard, and a surf shop on hand. Parking is free, both roadside and a few blocks back from the beach, though break-ins are common there, so don't leave anything valuable in the car.
