Rocky Lefts and Rights Surf Forecast Guide

Rocky Lefts and Rights is a boulder point break that throws up a left and a right on either side of the point. When it turns on it can get sucky and fast, so it rewards surfers who are comfortable in punchy waves.

When It Works

The point draws swell from southwest to north (SW-N), with southwest (SW) the direction that lines it up best. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft and breaks consistently, so there are usually waves on offer. The left throws barrels on straighter west swells, while the right is a predictable, shreddable wall.

Wind and Tide

Look for an east (E) offshore wind to clean it up. It needs some water over the boulders, coming into its own from mid to high tide, with a rising tide the better call.

Local Tips

This one suits intermediate surfers stepping up to a faster, hollower wave. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, though the surrounding stretch has so many waves to choose from that surfers tend to spread out.

Access

From New Plymouth, head southwest on Devon Street West onto South Road, State Highway 45, the Surf Highway. Continue through Okato, then turn right onto Paora Road and follow it to the end. Rocky Rights peels off the point on the right and Rocky Lefts is the left. There are restrooms, plus free roadside parking.
