Rocky Point Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Rocky Point is a flat, curving reef on the North Shore, roughly 250 yards wide and one of the most consistent waves on the coast. It breaks both left and right, serving up everything from soft walls to clean barrels and punchy air sections. The setup splits into two broad zones known as Rocky Rights and Rocky Lefts, each holding several takeoff points that come alive in different conditions.

When It Works

The reef pulls in swell from west through north to northeast (W-N-NE), with northwest (NW) the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and stays remarkably consistent across nearly any winter swell direction. The rights reel off in more northerly swells, while the faster lefts prefer more west to northwest. Autumn, winter, and spring all deliver, with winter the standout season.

Wind and Tide

Look for southeast (SE) offshore wind, though calm or light conditions are just as good, and the usual trades are fine as long as they aren't too strong. The curve of the reef even allows some wind variation depending on which section you ride. It handles low, mid, and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is an intermediate wave that rewards high-performance surfing, and it suits shortboards, bodyboards, and bodysurfing alike. Expect a very busy lineup whenever it's good, with much of the work going into jockeying for position among the peaks. The atmosphere is friendly, though humility and respect go a long way. Keep an eye on the reef, including a dangerous rock that pops up on the inside of Rocky Rights, and take care getting in and out on bigger swells.

Access

Reach it by driving about half a mile past Ehukai Beach Park on Kamehameha Highway, then turning onto Ke Nui Road and parking where authorized. Public access paths lead down to the sand, and there's a car park nearby.
