Overview
Ruapuke is a powerful beach break just south of Raglan on the west coast of Waikato, and a good summer alternative when the crowds pile onto Raglan's beaches. A genuine swell magnet, it breaks over sand along a wild 8 km stretch and throws up both lefts and rights.
When It Works
The banks draw swell from southwest through northwest, with southwest the best match. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft and stays very consistent, so there's almost always something to ride. Ruapuke is often blown out of control, but on a small swell the north end cleans up nicely. At higher tides, the Toreparu Stream can help shape some bars down the south end. Keep an eye out for vicious rips once it gets overhead.
Wind and Tide
Look for east offshore wind to groom it. The break works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Ruapuke suits intermediate surfers best. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working.
Access
From Hamilton, head west on Whatawhata Road (State Highway 23), then turn left onto Te Mata Road. Stay on Te Mata Road, turn right onto Ruapuke Road, and continue right onto Whaanga Road. Turn left onto Swan Access Road and follow it down to the beach. There's a car park with free parking and a basic campground, but otherwise no facilities along this stretch.
