Overview
Sabang sits on Pulau Weh, an island far better known for its diving than its surf, with whale sharks and turtles drawing most of the visitors. The waves here are a side dish rather than the main event: mushy, onshore beachbreaks running over sand, picking up northeast windswell. If you turn up expecting a proper surf destination you will be disappointed, but there are peaks to be found when the windswell shows.
When It Works
The beachbreaks take swell from north to northeast, and northeast is the direction that lines things up best. It is a windswell setup, so the waves arrive short-period and soft rather than groomed and powerful. The sand serves up both lefts and rights, giving you a choice of peaks when the banks cooperate. Sabang works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest wind to clean things up, since that is the offshore direction here. Anything else and you are back in the mushy onshore conditions the spot is known for. Tide is not much of a gatekeeper: low, mid, and high all see waves, though a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is beginner territory. The soft, mushy character of the waves and the forgiving sand bottom make Sabang a reasonable place to find your feet, rather than somewhere to chase performance surf.
