Overview
Salt Creek - Gravels sits just north of Salt Creek Beach and is a shallow, grinding beach break that fires as a fast right-hand barrel. It often closes out, but it throws great tube views along the way, which makes it a favorite for surf photographers thanks to the good lighting and action. The wave breaks over sand and offers both lefts and rights.
When It Works
Gravels draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest (S-WSW-NW), with southwest (SW) swell the best match. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so there is a wide window of workable size to play with. It is a consistent spot, so you can count on it turning on regularly through the year.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast (NE) offshore wind to clean things up. The wave works at low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Gravels suits intermediate surfers who are comfortable taking off on a shallow, quick wave. Expect a very busy lineup when it is breaking, so be ready to share the peak.
Access
There are restrooms and a lifeguard on hand. For parking you have plenty of choices, including a car park with free parking, paid and metered options, and roadside parking.
