Overview
Salt Pans is a left-hand reef break in Malta that peels over uneven reef. The standout wave around here is Qbajjar, which starts bigger out on the point before cleaning up and offering a good wall for manoeuvres through the inside.
When It Works
The reef pulls in swell from the north through east, and it comes into its own on northeast (NE) swell. It needs that NE direction to push into the bay, and when it does the wave handles just about anything, up to 8 ft / 2.5 m. It works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft. Waves here can be inconsistent, so it takes the right setup to line up.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind. The reef can work through most of the tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This one suits intermediate surfers, and you can expect a fairly quiet lineup when it works. Be ready for strong currents, which make the outside very difficult to surf without a sail.
Access
You paddle out via a ladder and come back in inside the bay.
