Saltburn Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Saltburn Beach was one of the first surf outposts on England's east coast and has grown into one of the UK's genuine wave-riding hubs. The main beach is a fairly average proposition, but a quality sandbar forms close to the pier now and then. To the south sits Penny's Hole, a sand and cobblestone break with some lovely lefts and rights. At the far southern end, tucked beneath the towering cliff, is Saltburn Point, a high-quality slabstone reef that wakes up in lined-up swells and throws out fast, reeling right-handers.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from north through east-northeast to southeast, with a north (N) swell the best match. It's usable from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, giving you anything from thigh-high peelers to overhead days. Both lefts and rights are on offer, and the standout banks tend to set up close to the pier, with a punchier low-tide bank down at Penny's Hole. Autumn is the season to circle, when the setup lines up most reliably.

Wind and Tide

Look for a south (S) offshore wind to clean things up. It breaks across all tides, though a rising tide is generally the better call, and the low-tide bank at Penny's Hole comes into its own toward the bottom of the tide. Paddling is straightforward most of the time, but expect harder work when it's big.

Local Tips

There's plenty of scope here for different boards, from shortboards and fish to funboards and longboards, and the walling waves are a favorite with longboarders. Beginners through to experts all find something to ride. Expect a moderately busy lineup when it's working, and it can feel a little reserved with the regulars who call it home.

Access

There's a beachside car park right by the surf shop, plus restrooms, a lifeguard presence, and a surf school on hand. Watch for rips when the swell picks up, and be aware there are still some lingering pollution issues, even though water quality has improved a great deal.
