Redcar and Cleveland sits on England's northeast coast, where a cluster of North Sea reefs and one open beach break come alive when swell swings in from the east. The shoreline faces broadly north to east, so the spots here feed off easterly through northeasterly swell, with the odd southeasterly or northerly pulse adding to the mix.
Most breaks are reefs over rock ledge, boulders, and rock, which gives the region its shape and its bias toward surfers who already know how to read a wave. A handful of sand-bottomed setups round things out and offer a gentler option. Notable spots include Redcar, Marske to Tees, and Saltburn Beach, the last of which has long been one of the northeast's best-known and most reliable waves. Saltburn in particular draws a steady lineup whenever the North Sea delivers.
To get these spots working, you generally want swell of around 3ft and up; below that most of the reefs stay flat, while bigger days hold anywhere from head-high to well overhead, roughly 8 to 12 feet at the more exposed breaks. Wind is the other key factor. Offshore conditions come from the southwest quarter, so a south to southwest breeze grooms the faces cleanest, which lines up neatly with the prevailing weather off this coast.
Tide is forgiving here. Many spots work through low, mid, and high water, though the reefs reward a bit of local knowledge about which stage suits each ledge. The season leans hard into autumn and winter, when North Sea depressions track close enough to fire consistent easterly swell. Summer runs quieter and often flat, so plan around the colder half of the year and pack a good wetsuit.
Surfing in Redcar and Cleveland spans the full range but skews toward intermediate and expert. The rock-ledge reefs demand confidence, timing, and respect for the bottom, while a beginner-friendly beach option exists for those still finding their feet. Board choice reflects that variety, from fish and shortboards on the punchier reef days to longboards and funboards when the beach break is small and playful.
The towns give the coastline its character. Redcar anchors the northern end with the largest concentration of spots, Saltburn and Marske add reef and beach variety a short drive south, and Loftus marks the quieter southern edge. Together they make a compact but varied stretch, best surfed when an easterly swell meets a light offshore wind through the autumn and winter months.
