Sands Beach Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Sands Beach is a wide, dependable beach break west of Isla Vista that almost always has something to ride. Waves peel both left and right over a mix of uneven reef and sand. In front of the bluff and bike rack sits a rocky peak known as Stu Peak, a favorite of UCSB students. Head toward the slough mouth and sandbars take over from the rocks, where the wave can get good and quite hollow.

When It Works

The beach draws swell from southwest through northwest, with west swell the best match. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.8 m / 6 ft and is very consistent, so you can usually count on a wave. Sands comes alive with peaky windswell, and the hollow sandbars near the slough want those same peaky pulses to fire.

Wind and Tide

Look for northeast offshore wind to clean things up. The break favors mid to high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call, and the sandbars near the slough want a medium-high incoming tide too. Steer clear of low tide, which brings out rip currents and close-outs.

Local Tips

Sands Beach suits intermediate surfers, and the lineup gets busy when it's on. On sunny, warm days plenty of students pack the beach as well. Watch for dangerous rocks, which are most exposed at low tide.

Access

Park for free at the west end of Isla Vista, including roadside spots, then walk a mile or so west across the bluff along the bike trail to reach the sand.
