Overview
Sandsend Bay - Caves is a long, mellow left that runs along a reef below the cliffs at the north end of the bay. It breaks over a rock ledge and peels as a point, so you get a good stretch of wall to work with when it lines up.
When It Works
It draws swell from north through east-northeast to southeast (N-ENE-SE), with a north swell the best match. The wave is usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 2.4 m / 8 ft, so you want a bit of size before it really gets going.
Wind and Tide
Look for a southwest offshore wind to clean it up. Mid tide is the pick here, and a rising tide is generally the better call.
Access
A pay and display car park overlooks the break, which makes checking the conditions easy. There are toilets at the car park entrance and a cafe on hand for before or after your session.
