Sandy Beach - Sitka, Alaska Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Sandy Beach sits on Baranof Island, part of the barrier that shelters Alaska's Inside Passage. Yakutat and Kodiak get more attention, but this is one of the most accessible places to paddle out in the region and the only Sitka break you can reach by road. It never gets truly world-class, yet its easy access and gentle nature make it a good place to learn. Expect it to be mostly flat through summer.

When It Works

Sandy Beach needs a really big southwest swell to come alive, which usually means winter. It draws swell from south through southwest, with southwest (SW) the best match. The reef breaks over boulders and sand and peels both left and right. It works from 0.3 m / 1 ft to 1.5 m / 5 ft, and it can be somewhat inconsistent, so you'll want to catch it when the swell lines up.

Wind and Tide

Look for a southeast (SE) wind to hold it clean and offshore. The break works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.

Local Tips

This is beginner-friendly terrain and a forgiving place to find your feet. The lineup stays fairly quiet, so you won't be fighting for waves when it's on.

Access

Getting here is easy by Alaska standards: a short drive from Sitka town centre puts you at the sand. There's a car park with free parking plus roadside parking, and you'll find camping and a surf shop nearby.
