Santa Amaro is the first spot on the train line out of central Lisbon, and it only comes to life on a big swell. When enough size arrives, it turns into a long right-hand point with fast, tubular sections peeling over an uneven reef.
When It Works
It takes a huge swell just to start breaking, so consistency is low and the good days are rare. The point draws swell from south through west-southwest to northwest, with southwest the best match, and it stays usable from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3 m / 10 ft. The standout combination is a southwest swell meeting an incoming tide, when those fast, tubular sections really show up.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to groom it. The point works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide the better call.
Local Tips
This is an expert-level wave. Expect rips, rocks, and a lineup that's always busy when it breaks. It also carries a reputation for the worst water quality in Portugal, so that's worth weighing before you paddle out.
Access
You'll find showers, a lifeguard, and a surf shop on hand. For parking, there's a car park along with roadside and paid options.
