Overview
Santa Catarina is the Azores' answer to Pipeline: a shallow, uneven reef that explodes close to shore just south of the harbour jetty. Take-offs are jacking air drops into a cavernous pit that peels both left and right for a short but intense barrel ride. Bodyboarders and pros love it, but this wave is not for everyone. With dry reef barely meters from the peak, there is no room for error.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from northwest to north, and a northwest (NW) swell is the best match. It takes a medium to big northwest swell to wrap in, and the spot works from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft. When the swell is running, it breaks fairly consistently.
Wind and Tide
Look for southwest (SW) offshore wind; any west in the wind helps. The reef breaks on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
This is strictly an expert wave. If you get caught inside, forget your board and swim as fast as you can with the direction of the current. The lineup can get crowded on weekends, when localism is more likely, so bring respect.
Access
There is a car park with free parking, plus roadside parking along the road. Be warned about the surroundings: a slaughterhouse, a chicken and cow food factory, a fish factory, and a basic primary sewage plant all sit nearby, and three outfalls leave the water heavily polluted. The overpowering stench, flocks of seagulls, and fishermen are the giveaways. Amazingly, locals report no one has been getting sick.
