Santa Marina Surf Forecast Guide

Overview

Santa Marina is a world-class right-hand reefbreak that peels off Isla de Santa Marina, a small island nature reserve just off the eastern end of Playa de Somo, east of Santander. The point wraps around the western fringe of the island and throws up huge, near-perfect walls. The outside section opens into a big face with room to move before it hits the inside and throws out into a heavy barrel. Expect freight-train walls and grinding sections over an uneven reef.

When It Works

This is a big-wave setup that comes alive on real size. It works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 4.6 m / 15 ft, and it tends to feel bigger once you are out there. The reef draws swell from the west through north (W-N), with northwest (NW) the best direction. The season runs through autumn and winter, roughly September to February. It gets very good when everything lines up, though the truly standout days come only a handful of times a year.

Wind and Tide

Look for east (E) offshore wind. The best sessions pair a large swell with an east or northeast wind, which is why they are so rare. It breaks best from mid to high tide, with a rising tide the better call. Lower tides are dangerous, with rocks sitting right in front of the take-off, so higher water is the safer bet.

Local Tips

Santa Marina is an expert-only wave. Bring a shortboard for the open faces, or a gun when it is really pumping. Expect a busy lineup with a large local crew when it is on, and a friendly atmosphere in the water. The big hold-downs and the rocks under the white water are the main things to respect.

Access

Getting out is a workout, with a long paddle to reach the wave. There are no facilities on the island, but campsites are nearby and the village of Loredo is close. Parking is free and roadside, though street spots can be hard to find when the wave is on.
