Overview
Sao Marcos is a sand-bottomed beach break that peels both left and right. It's an honest spot with real drawbacks: the water runs murky and unnaturally warm, tankers stream past on their way into the rivermouth, and there's the rare shark attack, roughly one a decade. Around the point to the west, Ponta da Areia sits deeper in the rivermouth and turns on for the occasional classic day when it gets protection from an east wind.
When It Works
The bank draws swell from north through east, with northeast (NE) the best direction to line it up. It's usable from 0.6 m / 2 ft to 1.2 m / 4 ft and breaks with moderate consistency, so the good windows come around without being an everyday thing.
Wind and Tide
Look for south (S) offshore wind to clean up the faces. It works on mid and high tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
The waves are approachable enough for beginners, and the lineup stays quiet. When Ponta da Areia around the point does break, expect more surfers to gather there, though that doesn't happen often.
