Overview
Sassandra is a right-hand reef break where the standout waves peel off a pink granite reef, producing rides of up to 100 metres. The main beach itself is dirty, so the reef rights are the real draw here. There are other good right point breaks scattered around the area that are worth searching out, plus miles of average beachbreak nearby if you want to explore.
When It Works
The reef draws swell from south through west, with south swell the best match for lining up those long rights. It works from 1.5 m / 5 ft to 3 m / 10 ft, so it wants a decent bit of size to get going. Waves break over an uneven reef and sand, and the setup is very consistent, delivering rideable days more often than not.
Wind and Tide
Look for northeast offshore wind to clean things up. The reef works on low and mid tide, with a rising tide generally the better call.
Local Tips
Despite the reef, the wave is approachable enough for beginners. Expect a fairly quiet lineup, so you will usually have plenty of room to find your rhythm.
Access
Head to Drewin village to reach the spot, where a local named Jule runs a surf camp. There is paid parking on hand. Keep in mind that the area swarms with mosquitoes during the rainy months, so come prepared.
