Overview
Savu Right is a fickle right-hand reef break that only rarely shows its best, but when everything lines up it fires off perfect right drainers and arguably the best barrel in the east. The wave runs down a swell-sheltered reef over a dead coral bottom, and it takes a big, wrapping swell to bend in and stand up those ruler-edged walls.
When It Works
This one is all about size and angle. The reef draws swell from the southwest through west, and southwest swell is the best match, with more west in the swell helping it wrap further around the reef. It works from 0.9 m / 3 ft to 3.7 m / 12 ft, and it really comes alive on a large, wrapping swell. Consistency is middling and it can be somewhat inconsistent, so the conditions it needs rarely line up and plenty of surfers wait it out and get skunked. Timing and patience are everything here.
Wind and Tide
Offshore winds blow from the southeast. It can work through most of the tide, but a rising tide is generally the better call.
Local Tips
Given the size it demands and the raw reef setup, Savu Right is strictly an expert's wave. Even on the rare days it turns on, the lineup stays fairly quiet.
